Where did the “For the Love for LUMS” benefit come from?

I personally became a friend of LUMS when my son Erik, 13 years old, who has been volunteering in the meal service with his father since he was about 8 years old, invited me to come help serve a meal. Our involvement has brought us so much personal joy, understanding and acceptance of our societies’ diversities. The reality is, whether we like it or not these people are our neighbors and under the most unimaginable circumstances, they could be our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers or friends.

When I learned that part of the requirement for a course that I’m taking, Self Expression and Leadership Program” through Landmark Education, is organizing a community project, I knew right away that I wanted to do something for LUMS.

As soon as I put the call out to friends and family that this was what I was up to, I had a full list of volunteers. Everyone just gets how much help is needed in the Downtown Eastside and most of us just feel helpless. Together we really can do something though, even if it’s just a little something here and a little something there, it all adds up. Deena
